4 inch concrete is the standard around Brevard County. Most driveways and house slabs are 4 inches thick. Choosing to upgrade to 6 inches thick will increase strength but comes at a heavier cost to your budget.
For the last 15 years or so in this area fibermesh has been the standard and the most budget friendly.
Wiremesh was phased out due to concrete cracking and then water getting to that steel wire and causing rust. Once the rust starts the wire looses its strength/benefit and then the concrete will start to chip up under the pressure from expanding rust. Rebar is still used in this area in footings but is not common in 4 inch slabs like some places up north. Rebar is a great to strengthen concrete but also hits the budget hard.
In this area concrete is normally 4 inches thick placed on whatever fill was used for the house pad. Up north things are done alot different with 5 inches or so of a high density material placed under driveways. This may not be necessary though. If maintained properly a 4 inch thick concrete driveway on normal compacted fill could last you up to 30 years. If you wish to beef up the strength and longevity of your driveway, this can be a great option.
